I am once again in my alien sci-fi romance era.
I downloaded Taming Chaos one night while mourning the death of booktok. It is a short, 240-page spin off of the larger Darkstar Mercenaries series by Carven. With over 4 star ratings on both Amazon and Goodreads, my expectations were high.
Torin, our MMC, is a Kordolian First Division warrior with a dark past, looking for nothing more than to complete his mission. When he runs into a group of humans at an illegal trading post in the midst of an even more illegal exchange of plasma guns, the last thing he expects is to come to the rescue of a curvy, beautiful human named Seph. After a betrayal of the worst kind, Torin will stop at nothing to make sure Seph makes it back to Earth alive, even if he has to ignore the way her freckles make his heart pound and her fiery personality makes his nanosuit armor tighten.
While the book started off strong with fast pace action and intriguing characters, I feel like the second half of the book was a bit too slow for me. There wasn’t much happening, and there wasn’t enough excitement or romance to keep me engaged. I found myself skimming the last 1/3 of the book and ultimately, it fell a bit flat.
Don’t get me wrong! It wasn’t a bad book by any means and is a great palette cleanser of any of my fantasy/sci fi lovers out there, but I likely won’t be continuing the series.
Final Rating: 3/5 stars.
