The Ghost Alphas Unit by Lenore Rosewood: a full series review
This one is for my freaks that like masks (spoiler, its me... I'm the freak.)
If you pick up any book by Lenore Rosewood, you are a freaky fuck.
That being said, I read three of her books this weekend.
The Characters and Universe
The Ghost Alphas Unit are dystopian, dark reverse harem romances featuring one of my favorite subgenres… Alpha, Beta, Omega (A/B/O) dynamics. I need A/B/O injected into my veins at least once a month otherwise I will simply pass away.
There are a total of four books in the universe so far, with the first three being an interconnected series and the fourth being the first of a spin off featuring recurring side characters.
There are no paranormal elements in this story, so no shifting or any other paranormal tomfoolery. There is, however, knotting (*smirks*). Miss Rosewood knows what the people (aka me) want.
The FMC
Our FMC is Ivy, a feral omega that bites men with wandering hands. Honestly, you go girl. She has a tortured past and trusts no alphas. And why would she? We first meet her in a government-run facility responsible for ‘training’ omegas to be good, obedient baby making machines. Her life has been anything but easy, and she will do anything to gain her freedom— even if it means fighting her way through five alphas from the notoriously deadly Ghost Unit.
The Ghosts.
Valek, the wolfish serial killer from death row.
Plague, the combat medic.
Whiskey, the big trash-talking himbo.
Wraith, the mute, scarred monster with a fractured mind.
Thane, the stone-cold leader who rules his pack of rabid attack dogs with an iron fist.
While I do think the author does a great job of creating distinct individuals within the harem— a challenge not every author is able to achieve— I do feel like the relationships between characters were not developed as organically as they could have been, and that some of the choices of the FMC felt a bit OOC (out of character) for what we had been lead to expect of her.
Pros
I thought this was a really unique take on the A/B/O universe! The A/B/O dynamics were results of nuclear and chemical warfare that torn the modern world apart. Basically, radiation resulted in a weird mutation that caused them to be 6’7”, freakishly strong, unusually sexy hormone driven alphas instead of your usual MMC.
I’m vibing.
Sometimes when reading RH novels, the characters all feel like they fill a “niche” in the pack. I do feel like there was a little overlap in some of the MMC’s personalities, but overall they felt like distinct characters with their own backstories and drive.
The originality in this universe was great. It was the first omegaverse I’ve read in a long time where the universe felt original and well thought out. Think ABO x Handmaiden’s Tale.
Cons
It felt like Ivy’s opinion of the alphas flipped too quickly. She went from “don’t even look in my direction or I’ll bit your fingers off” to “I want to spend my heat with all of you at the same time” waaaay too quickly. To be honest, the trash talking and slight bullying dialogue was cringe at the beginning of the series, and there was little to no communication between these two phases. For an FMC whose main characteristics were being guarded, previously violated by strangers, and hating of all alpha, it didn’t make any sense.
The pacing was inconsistent and made the novels feel simultaneously too short and far too long in certain areas. There was little development in terms of plot for the first book and second books, but things progressed quickly in the final third book of this series. The slow moving progress dragged a bit too much for me, and I found myself skimming past a good chuck of each book.
Final Thoughts
For my final thoughts, I’d like to give you a rating for each book and my final series thoughts after. My ratings for each book in the Ghost Alphas Unit are…
Feral Omega (Ghost Alphas Unit #1)
Unhinged Alphas (Ghost Alphas Unit #2)
Feral Pack (Ghost Alphas Unit #3)
Overall, I would give the entire series 3.75/5 stars.
All in all, I enjoyed my time with the Ghost Alphas Unit, and I would definitely pick up another book by Lenore Rosewood again. I really liked her writing style, and found her world building unique and engaging. And let me tell you… THE SPICE.
THE SPICE.
Do yourself a favor and read this series soon. Make sure you have a towel ready.
Thanks for reading! Until next time.
